What is macro photography

Macro photography represents a specialized method aimed at capturing very small objects in extreme proximity. The essence of this technique lies in the ability to capture subjects in detail at a reproduction scale of 1:1 or even larger, meaning that these subjects are reproduced at their actual size on the camera sensor. Unlike standard lenses, so-called “macro” lenses are designed specifically for this close-up shot.

This photographic approach is clearly different from a simple close-up. It helps reveal features and textures that are generally invisible to the naked eye.

As a result, macro photography offers an exceptional perspective on the hidden details of the elements around us. Macro lenses enable precise focusing at close range, allowing photographers to explore a miniature universe and capture unique perspectives.

The advantages of macro photo

Macro photography offers various advantages, it allows the capture of minute details on small objects such as flowers, insects or jewelry. These details, usually indistinguishable to the naked eye, are revealed thanks to macro photography, thus offering a unique perspective on these subjects. Furthermore, this technique offers complete control over depth of field, allowing the creation of images with a restricted area of focus. This highlights important features of the object while creating a nice soft focus in the background.

Additionally, macro photography is used for capturing product images for catalogs or e-commerce platforms. It highlights product features, thereby improving the shopping experience for customers.

Finally, this technique can be used to create artistic and creative images. It highlights the textures, colors and shapes of objects, allowing the creation of abstract and captivating images.

For which sector?

From watchmaking to jewelry, from haute couture to electronics, macrophotography finds diverse applications in a multitude of sectors and each field benefits from this technique to reveal details imperceptible to the naked eye. Jewelry sparkles with unparalleled clarity, fabric textures come to life, tiny elements of electronics become visible in detail.

  • Watchmaking & Jewelry: The use of a macro lens becomes a major asset. It allows the careful capture of the most subtle details of watches and jewelry, including diamonds and precious stones, elements often too small to be distinguished with the naked eye.
  • Catering & Food: In the catering and food industry, the macro lens allows you to see the textures, colors and minute details of food.
  • Cosmetics: Macro photography allows you to highlight the textures, nuances and details of beauty products. Cosmetics, often adorned with delicate finishes and hidden features, are presented in a new light thanks to this approach.

This expertise and technique materializes within our photographic file. Each sector of activity, from the most traditional to the most innovative, finds a new perspective thanks to this approach.

How do you ensure adequate lighting during macro photography sessions?

During our macro photography sessions, we pay special attention to lighting to ensure professional results. Given the proximity to the subject, light can play a crucial role in highlighting subtle details. We mainly use artificial light sources to create balanced lighting as we wish. Adjustable LED lights and diffusers are essential tools for avoiding harsh shadows and unwanted reflections on glassware or metal for example. This is why it is necessary to regularly adjust the angle and intensity of lighting depending on the composition and characteristics of the subject.

How do you integrate macro photography into larger projects, such as videos or audiovisual performances?

Integrating macro photography into larger audiovisual projects is an exciting opportunity to enrich visual storytelling and create moments of intimate proximity with the subject. We use smooth transitions between macro shots and wider shots to create a captivating visual rhythm. This combination allows viewers to experience the beauty of the subjects at a close-up level, enhancing the emotional impact of the video.

What are the main mistakes to avoid when taking macro photography?

When taking macro photographs, it is essential to be aware of several frequently encountered errors that can potentially alter the quality of the images obtained. One of these critical errors is the lack of camera stability. This issue becomes particularly sensitive in the context of macro photography due to the close proximity of the photographed subject. Even the slightest vibration or unintentional movement can result in unwanted blurring, compromising the sharpness and precision of captured details. To overcome this problem, we have implemented rigorous measures. Indeed, we use robust tripods specially adapted for macro photography.

These tripods provide optimal stability, minimizing any risk of unintentional movement during shooting. Additionally, the use of remote triggers represents an essential step in our approach. These devices allow the device to be triggered remotely, eliminating the risk of shaking induced by direct pressure on the device’s trigger. Thanks to this combination of measures, we are able to guarantee exceptional image quality during our macro photography sessions.

Another common mistake is too shallow depth of field, which can result in overly selective and blurry focus. We adjust the aperture of the diaphragm to achieve adequate depth of field while keeping key details sharp.

Finally, light management can be a challenge, with excessive shadows or unwanted reflections. We use diffusers, reflectors and various other light sources to achieve fair, contrasting lighting while avoiding dazzling light.

What types of equipment do you use for macro photography?

To take macro photographs, our photographers are equipped with two lenses in order to take impactful macro photos.

Laowa 24mm F14 Macro 2x Probe: This lens is unique because of its probe-type design, which provides unique perspectives for macro shooting. One of the key advantages of this lens is its ability to get very close to the subject, allowing for shots at an extremely close point of view. The minimum focusing distance is approximately 2 cm. Thanks to its probe design, this lens offers unique possibilities for shooting from different points of view.

Sony FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS: This lens is more traditional for macro photography, offering great image quality and varied possibilities for shooting. This lens captures sharp details while achieving pleasant background blur (bokeh) to highlight the subject.

How to properly compose your macro photography?

Understanding how to properly compose macro photography is important for capturing the most detailed images. Using their camera, our photographers take high-quality shots. To effectively compose a macro photograph, it is imperative to choose an appropriate subject, use a dedicated macro lens for optimal sharpness, control the depth of field by adjusting the aperture, ensure precise focus, track basic composition tips, managing light to minimize unwanted shadows, paying attention to the background to avoid distractions, stabilizing the camera with a tripod, exploring different shooting angles view for a captivating perspective, follow the tips for patience and precision while shooting, and consider subtle post-processing to optimize image quality while preserving its authenticity.
